Why Bamboo Sheets Are Still One of the Best Choices

DreamFit’s Top Fifteen Benefits of Bamboo
Last month/week/whatever, we looked at the process the bamboo plant goes through as it goes from a grass to a healthy, affordable, and supple fabric.
Thousands of people and industries tout the benefits of this type of fabric, but what are the real benefits of Bamboo? And why are our bamboo sheets consistently one of our most beloved sheet sets?
Both the New York Times “The Benefits of Bamboo,” and the popular Organic Clothing website believe there are many, many benefits of bamboo that not only provide a sense of luxury, but comfort, and an environmental sense of responsibility.
We at DreamFit couldn’t agree more. We gathered their choices and used our own years of production experience to put together what we believe are the Top Fifteen Benefits of Bamboo:
- Bamboo fabric has a natural sheen and softness that feels and drapes like silk but is less expensive and more durable.
- Bamboo fabric is easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer.
- Because of the smooth and round structure of its fibers, bamboo fabric is soft and non-irritating, even to sensitive skin.
- Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
- Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic.
- Bamboo is highly absorbent and wicks water away from the body 3 to 4 times faster than cotton. In warm, humid and sweaty weather, bamboo clothing helps keep the wearer drier, cooler and more comfortable and doesn’t stick to the skin.
- The structure of bamboo fibers make bamboo fabrics more breathable and thermal regulating than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics.
- Bamboo fabric is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton, and while it might still require ironing after washing, bamboo fabric can be ironed at a lower temperature than cotton. Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures.
- Bamboo fibers and fabrics absorb dyes faster and more thoroughly.
- Bamboo grows rapidly reaching maturity in as little as two years, and i grows naturally without any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.
And as the New York Times explains, “Cut down a hardwood tree and it’s gone. It will take several decades for another to grow in its place…but bamboo is a grass, not a tree. Under the right conditions, it can grow a full meter a day — you can literally watch it grow. “ - Bamboo fabric (both mechanically and chemically manufactured) is 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed in the soil.
- Growing bamboo improves soil quality and helps rebuild eroded soil. The extensive root system of bamboo holds soil together, prevents soil erosion, and retains water in the watershed.
- Other plants can benefit from bamboo growth. The New York Times expands on this benefit: “because bamboo requires few nutrients, it can grow in soil inhospitable to other plants — not only does it thrive there, it can reclaim the land so other plants can thrive, too. Its roots leach heavy metals from the soil, hold the soil together and draw water closer to the surface.”
- Bamboo grows naturally and quickly without the need for agricultural tending and large diesel exhaust-spewing tractors to plant seeds and cultivate the soil. And just as grass grows almost as soon as you finish cutting it, “bamboo regrows after harvesting and after it is mature, bamboo can be harvested every single year for the life of the plant.
- Bamboo plantations reduces greenhouse gases. Bamboo plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide (a primary greenhouse gas) and produces about 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.
